Brent L. Benefield, P.E.

Brent Benefield founded Controls & Electrical Design Services, Inc. (C&E Design®) in 1993 in Decatur, AL.  In 1997, the company built a new facility and relocated to Madison, AL.  As President / General Manager of C&E Design since its inception over 25 years ago, Brent and his team has served many corporations of North Alabama with exceptional engineering services.

Brent is a twice-graduate of Auburn University, receiving dual B.S. degrees in Agricultural Engineering (1981) and in Electrical Engineering (1984).  Since then, he has accumulated over thirty years’ experience in design and construction of industrial and commercial electrical applications, with an emphasis on control systems.  On the industrial side, Brent has been involved in the design and construction of pulp and paper, automotive, textile, chemical, wastewater and materials handling facilities, as well as the associated process control systems for these facilities.  On the commercial side, he has been involved in electrical design and construction administration for warehouses, banks, offices, churches and other general commercial facilities.  Additionally, he spent a number of years working in design, fabrication, programming and start-up of electronic security controls and communications systems for jails and prisons. 

Brent attributes his successes over the years to the Lord’s blessings and a lot of hard work.

• Specification and design of low and medium voltage power distribution and motor controls

• Production of electrical and instrumentation documents including power plans, cable schedules, interconnect diagrams, motor elementaries and loop diagrams

• Lighting, grounding and communication systems design

• Electrical equipment room layout and design

• Performing Short-Circuit, Device Coordination and Arc Flash Hazard studies utilizing ETAP Power System software

• Detailed design of control systems including panel layouts, wiring diagrams, cabinet drawings and bills-of-materials in compliance with UL 508A standards

• Configuration and programming of PLC-based controls, including:  Allen-Bradley, Siemens, GE/Fanuc, Omron

• Operator interfaces utilizing Allen-Bradley’s FactoryTalk View Site and Machine Editions, and Wonderware Intouch

• Design and programming of motion controls for industrial machinery

• Fabrication and UL508A labeling of control and electrical panels

• On-site support for installation and start-up

• Extensive utilization of computer-aided-design (CAD) including AutoCad and MicroStation

• Supervision of engineering design personnel
